“The striking architecture of the Bridge of Lions has been considered an important component of the fabric of the City; the bridge towers are prominent in every sky rendering of St. Augustine.” – FDOT
St. Augustine is the oldest European settlement in North America, colonized in 1565, and is the longest continually inhabited European founded city in the United States. The Spanish influence is seen throughout the city including the architecture of the Bridge of Lions. The present Bridge of Lions opened in 1927 replacing a wooden toll bridge that was built in 1895. The Florida Department of Transportation awarded a $76 million contract to Tidewater Skanska for the rehabilitation of the Bridge of Lions.
The WPC office in Jacksonville was selected by Tidewater Skanska to perform the drilled shaft slurry testing for the rehabilitation project. Testing included the pH, viscosity, density, and sand content of the slurry. Samples from the holding tanks, de-sander discharge, and drilled shafts were tested. Prior to the concrete placement, WPC sampled slurry throughout the shaft at 10-foot intervals. This project required 24 hours/day testing.
