Construction on the South Corridor Light Rail Project, Charlotte's first rapid transit line, began in the Spring 2005. The South Corridor Light Rail line is approximately 10 miles long running north from I-485 at South Boulevard to 7th Street in Center City Charlotte. The system operates on two tracks generally within the existing railroad right-of-way paralleling South Boulevard. The project was completed in the fall of 2007.
WPC provided construction materials testing and special inspection services for the new vehicle maintenance building associated with the project. The structure is a multi-story, steel-framed structure supported by a deep foundation system consisting of grade beams, pile caps, concrete slabs on grade, and 440 micropiles. WPC performed Special Inspections according to Chapter 17 of the IBC 2003 guidelines and Mecklenburg County Standards.
In addition to the vehicle maintenance facility, WPC also provided construction materials testing for the I-485/South Boulevard Station. This station is a joint-use facility with a four-story underground parking deck and an elementary school playground above the 300,000 square feet of space. The 1,000-car parking deck is built upon a deep foundation system with drilled shafts ranging from three feet to six feet in diameter.
