WPC was invited to join the Design Build team, lead by Sauer, Inc. and TranSystems, for the Starship 11000 Barracks at Fort Jackson, SC. WPC provided geotechnical engineering and field drilling services. The project consisted of rapid engineering for the design and construction of temporary barracks on a green site, while the existing barracks facility was gutted and renovated.
WPC explored the soil conditions at the site using a combination of conventional Soil Test Borings (STB) supplemented by Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and Dilatometer Testing (DMT). The combination of methods allowed for sophisticated modeling and seismic analysis of the subsurface conditions, which led to a very efficient geotechnical design.
The topography at the site was unusually hilly and retaining walls were designed to maximize the usable area of the site. Since the structures were temporary, WPC designed a flexible foundation system while renovations were ongoing, allowing for rapid construction at minimal cost.
