The U.S. National Whitewater Center is a world-class recreation and training facility located in Charlotte, NC. The $35 million facility is set among 300 wooded acres along the Catawba River. The park’s distinctive feature is the world’s largest multi-channel recirculating whitewater river and the only man-made structure of its kind in the United States.
WPC was involved with the whitewater center from its early design stages through the project’s completion three years later. WPC provided geotechnical engineering evaluation and design for site development including intermediate hazard dams and site infrastructure for the whitewater center. WPC performed state-of-the-art insitu soil testing for the structural fill around the project’s 600-foot dam.
During construction, WPC performed full-time quality control testing for the primary structure which was built as an earthen dam with a pond and channel system. Full-time special inspection services and quality control testing for the construction of the pump house structure, filtration system, conveyor belt, entrance roadways, retaining walls, Welcome Center and associated structures were also provided by WPC. This project earned an Engineering Excellence Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC) annual competition.
